Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv

This guide to the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv opens with British police raiding its basement in 1946 and hauling out a hidden weapons cache during a search that followed the King David Hotel bombing. It goes back to the congregation's founding in 1913 and the decades-long struggle to build the sanctuary, as a competition winner, then two more architects, tried to see the design through a world war. A donation from Baron Edmond James de Rothschild finally let the doors open around 1925.
