George's Street Arcade

This guide to George's Street Arcade in Dublin opens with the fire of August 1892, when flames tore through the market and a crowd of Dubliners from every walk of life gathered to watch, while fire brigade chief Thomas Purcell fought to keep the blaze from the whiskey stores next door. It reaches back further still, to the market's original 1881 construction by English architects and builders, and the resentment that stirred among Dubliners shut out of the work.
