The Blanco Renaissance Museum

This guide to the Blanco Renaissance Museum in Ubud follows the surrealist painter Antonio Blanco from his 1912 birth in Manila through Florida, Hawaii and Cambodia, chasing the trail of Paul Gauguin toward Tahiti, until 1952, when he landed in Bali instead and never left. He fell for a Balinese dancer named Ni Ronji within a year of arriving, and married her; the king of Ubud, taken with Blanco, gave him this hillside above the Campuhan river to build on. Listen for the cockatoos and macaws still shrieking through the garden as you walk.
