Japanese Garden

This guide to the Japanese Garden on Budapest's Margaret Island follows György Magyar, the young gardener who took charge of the island after an 1876 flood nearly swallowed it whole, and who in 1884 built an unlikely Japanese-style garden of boxwoods, ferns and stone lanterns beside the Danube. It traces the garden's decline by the late 1960s and the restoration that brought it back in 2013 and 2014. Look for the koi and turtles gliding beneath the water lilies as you walk the paths.
