Yuen Po Street Bird Garden

This guide to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden in Mong Kok follows the Cantonese custom of "walking the bird," the daily ritual that brings elderly owners and their caged songbirds here each morning to hang the cages from the trees and let the birds sing together. It introduces Chan Lok-choi, a craftsman who has made the garden's handmade bamboo and teak cages for over sixty years, and traces the garden back to its 1997 opening after the original Bird Street was demolished for a shopping mall.
