Bom Retiro

This guide to Bom Retiro in São Paulo follows Rua Jose Paulino as a relay race in the garment trade, run by immigrant communities who never met but inherited the same streets. It starts around 1904 with Eastern European Jewish peddlers arriving from the nearby Luz railway station, among them a furniture seller named Meyer Goldstein, and traces how their workshops and storefronts built up the neighborhood they called their shtetl. From there it follows the trade as it passed to Korean tailors in the 1980s and 90s, and then to newer hands still working the same counters today.
