Kalk Bay

This guide to Kalk Bay village near Cape Town traces a Main Road church built in 1876, which held Dutch Reformed services for most of a century before standing empty as a protected heritage shell. In 2005 Simon and Helen Cooper, together with Nicholas and Liz Ellenbogen, reimagined the nave as a theatre, building seventy-eight beech seats around a thrust stage on three sides. Look up at the gallery seating as you enter, arranged so diners could once look straight down onto the performers below.
