Amy Biehl Memorial

This guide to the Amy Biehl Memorial tells the story of Amy Biehl, a 26-year-old American student who was driving three Black colleagues home to Gugulethu on 25 August 1993 while working on voter education ahead of South Africa's first democratic election, when a crowd surrounded her car. It follows her parents, Linda and Peter, to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1998, where they took a stance on the men convicted of her killing that almost nobody expected. Four young men were sentenced for the killing before that hearing ever took place.
