Iziko Old Town House Museum

This guide to the Iziko Old Town House Museum in Cape Town opens with a mismatched balcony on Greenmarket Square and works back to the building's 1761 construction as a night-watch house for Cape burghers. The foundation stone went in six years earlier, laid with a Cape-silver trowel that still survives inside the museum. It follows the story to two earthquakes, in 1809 and 1811, and a farmhouse near present-day Milnerton that took even worse damage.
