Muslim Quarter

This guide to Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter starts with an 1841 British mapmaker who pinned the name to these lanes, and the mixed Jewish, Christian and Muslim residents the label never quite fit. It follows the walk north to Damascus Gate, where stairs drop into a Roman plaza built around 130 CE under the emperor Hadrian's rebuilt city, Aelia Capitolina. Stand at the gate and look both up at the modern arch and down at the stairs, where two thousand years sit only a few steps apart.
