Lions' Gate

This guide to Lions' Gate in Jerusalem's Old City opens at dawn on June 7, 1967, with a city bus wedged sideways across the entrance and Jordanian soldiers using it to block the way in. It follows Colonel Motta Gur's paratroopers, pinned in the open after a night of fighting through the streets outside the walls, and the Sherman tank that squeezes in behind them. Look up at the four carved lions above the gate, and the sultan who legend says dreamed of them in the sixteenth century.
