Imizamo Yethu

Imizamo Yethu, Cape Town, 7806

Hillside township built plot by plot after nineteen ninety-one land occupations, rebuilt again after a devastating twenty seventeen fire.

This guide to Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay opens in late 1990, when black families who had long squatted around the harbour were finally granted eighteen hectares of forestry land, and by 1991 more than four hundred families had staked out plots between two of Cape Town's wealthiest estates. It follows the seven months of negotiation between residents and the white ratepayers who had tried to keep them out, under a name, Imizamo Yethu, that means our collective efforts. Listen for how a fire on March 11, 2017, burned for more than thirteen hours through the shacks around you.
