This guide to the Universidade de São Paulo centers on a single night, February 23rd 1999, when a marching band played over a swimming pool to cover the noise of a freshman hazing ritual known as the trote. Among the newcomers being pulled toward the water was a twenty-two-year-old first-year medical student named Edison Tsung Chi Hsueh, who could not swim. Stand at the rectory building where the university's response to that night was eventually signed, and listen for what the courts were and weren't able to settle afterward.
