Jaffa Gate

Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem opens onto a story of two different arrivals into the Old City. The guide sets up Suleiman the Magnificent's sixteenth-century gate, built as the grand pilgrim entrance from the port of Jaffa, with its defensive L-shaped turn just inside the doorway. It then turns to 1898, when Kaiser Wilhelm II arrived and had Ottoman workers cut a gap beside the gate rather than bow his head to enter. Locals had long repeated a prophecy about whoever entered the city on a white horse becoming its ruler.
