Dynamic Earth

This guide traces James Hutton, an eighteenth-century farmer turned geologist who studied the crags behind this science centre and arrived at an idea so radical the Church called it heresy. In 1785, too ill to present it himself, his friend Joseph Black read his paper to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. From there the guide moves indoors, into galleries built to let you feel the same slow forces of ice and storm that Hutton read in the rock outside.
