Kasteelspoort Hiking trail

This guide to the Kasteelspoort Hiking trail in Cape Town centers on the rusted remains of a Victorian cargo cableway, built in 1893 to haul cement, pipe, and steel up the gorge for the Woodhead Reservoir above. It follows the engineers who strung a cable more than 700 metres up the cliff and hung an open metal skip from it, a bare box that riders at the time called simply terrifying. Stand at Breakfast Rock, the flat outcrop where laborers once waited their turn to be hauled up.
