Dominus Flevit Church

Dominus Flevit Church on Jerusalem's Mount of Olives grew out of a 1953 construction accident: workmen laying a chapel's foundations broke into ancient tombs and a hoard of silver shekels from the Jewish revolt against Rome. The guide follows archaeologist Bellarmino Bagatti's excavation of Bronze Age burials and an early Christian necropolis, then turns to architect Antonio Barluzzi's decision to shape the church that rose afterward like a single teardrop, its four stone vials echoing ancient mourners' tear vessels.
