Rockefeller Archaeological Museum

This guide to the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem opens three days before its 1938 opening, when archaeologist James Leslie Starkey set out from his dig at Lachish for the ceremony and never arrived. The American donor who funded the building never once set foot inside it, and the architect had already left the country by the time it opened. Look up at the octagonal tower, which later became a fought-over vantage point in the 1967 war.
