This guide to the Amidong Tombstone Village in Busan starts in the summer of 1950, when war refugees flooding into Busan found nowhere left to build except uphill, on a Japanese cemetery abandoned since 1945. It follows how families raised homes directly on top of headstones cut with Japanese names and dates, turning grave plots into house footprints and gravestones into paving slabs underfoot. Look for the grave plots barely larger than a small room, each one now the footprint of a family's home.
