Nobel Square

This guide to Nobel Square on Cape Town's waterfront opens with an odd detail: the four bronze figures of Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, F. W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela have oversized heads and heavy hands, nothing like a conventional peace memorial. It follows the sculptor Claudette Schreuders, chosen over nine competing artists, and her eight months carving each figure from raw wood blocks in a West African folk-art tradition before a foundry cast them in bronze. The four now stand in a loose semicircle, backs to the sea and to Robben Island.
