This guide to Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu follows the Tang-dynasty poet's years here as a war refugee beginning in 761, when he built a bamboo hut by Flower Rinsing Brook with no money and no official post. It centers on an ordinary visit from a local official named Cui, and the poem Du Fu wrote about having almost nothing in his kitchen to offer a guest. He wrote more than two hundred poems in this garden during his stay, many about hunger, cold and the small comforts he shared with neighbors.
