Museum of Childhood

This guide to the Museum of Childhood on Edinburgh's Royal Mile follows Patrick Murray, a city councillor who in 1955 opened the world's first museum built entirely around the history of childhood, after refusing to let two of Queen Victoria's dolls leave Scotland for good. It traces the collection's growth through a former Salvation Army hall and into the building next door, taking in rocking horses, tin soldiers and a teddy bear carried out of Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport in 1939.
