Superdawg Drive-In

This guide to Superdawg Drive-In in Chicago tells the story behind the two giant fiberglass hot dog statues winking at each other on its roof, named Maurie and Flaurie after the couple who built the place. It follows Maurie Berman, a World War Two veteran, and his high school sweetheart Flaurie from their 1947 marriage into opening this drive-in at Milwaukee, Devon, and Nagle the following spring. He built her statue by hand from chicken wire and papier-mache, stuffed with actual 1948 newspapers, while Flaurie herself worked as the stand's first carhop.
