Acropolis of Lindos

This guide to the Acropolis of Lindos follows Danish philologist Karl Frederik Kinch, funded by the Carlsberg brewing fortune, as he climbs the cliff above Lindos in 1902 hunting for a temple no one had proven existed, and finds a fourth-century-BC shrine to Athena within two seasons. It traces his partnership with fellow excavator Blinkenberg, his marriage to the artist documenting the dig, and the Knights' great staircase and carved warship relief still cut into the rock below. Stand at the foot of that staircase and you're standing where their daughter was born, in the middle of the dig.
