Mount Lycabettus

This guide to Mount Lycabettus in Athens opens in 1834, when a monk named Emmanuel Louloudakis climbed the hill alone and didn't come back down, at a time when the slopes were nothing but loose limestone and wandering goats. Athens assumed him dead and mourned him, until three years later lights were spotted flickering on the summit at night. The guide also carries the myth of how the hill got here at all, with the goddess Athena said to have dropped a slab of stone in shock at unwelcome news. Best heard on the walk up, where the road and funicular both follow the route built after his disappearance made headlines.
