London Zoo

This guide to London Zoo follows a Canadian army veterinarian named Harry Colebourn, who bought an orphaned bear cub for twenty dollars at a train platform in Ontario in 1914 and named her Winnie after his hometown. It traces her journey with his regiment to England, and the quiet detour he made through London before shipping out to the trenches, leaving her at this zoo for what he thought would be just the duration of the war. Among the children who visited her on the Mappin Terraces was a small boy who already had a stuffed bear of his own at home.
