Jardin Botanique de l'université de Strasbourg

This guide to the Jardin Botanique de l'universite de Strasbourg follows Heinrich Anton de Bary, the garden's nineteenth-century director, as he sets out in the 1860s to challenge the era's medical establishment over what causes disease in plants. It traces his later work on lichens too, and the word he coined in 1879 to describe the strange partnership he found inside them. The garden itself began in 1619 to train doctors in medicinal plants, and its current layout, the arboretum and greenhouses among them, dates to de Bary's rebuilding after Strasbourg's annexation in 1871.
