Trophy of Augustus

This guide to the Trophy of Augustus above Monaco follows a Roman victory tower through centuries of people trying to destroy or dismantle it, from monks pulling down its statues around the year 700 to Louis the Fourteenth's engineers trying to blow it apart in 1705. It reaches back to the original monument, its ring of columns and the inscription naming the Alpine tribes Rome had conquered. Along the way, villagers from La Turbie carted off its stone for centuries to build their own houses and parish church.
