Le Negresco

This guide to Le Negresco follows a chandelier commissioned by Tsar Nicholas the Second for the Kremlin that never made it there, and Henri Negresco, a Romanian innkeeper's son who built a Belle Epoque palace on the Promenade des Anglais around it instead. Architect Edouard-Jean Niermans, fresh off designing the Moulin Rouge, gave the hotel a white facade and a pink dome, and English lords and Russian grand dukes filled its four hundred rooms each winter season. Look up at the dome above the Salon Royal, where that chandelier still hangs.
