Chapelle de la Miséricorde

This guide to the Chapelle de la Miséricorde in Nice opens with cracks in its walls, caused not by age but by a 1980s parking garage dug beneath it. It traces the chapel back to the 1740s, when the Theatine order handed architect Bernardo Vittone an awkward leftover plot once used for the King of Sardinia's salt warehouses, and the elliptical, straight-wall-free design he built there instead. You'll hear how its convent was stacked directly above the nave for lack of room, and how the Black Penitents later took charge of the building. Restoration on the chapel only wrapped up in 2010.
