Cascade du Château

This guide to the Cascade du Château in Nice opens with Louis the Fourteenth's 1706 order to erase the citadel that had stood on this hill for a thousand years, and the six months of gunpowder and pickaxes it took to carry that order out. It follows the bare hilltop's slow return as a public garden in the eighteen twenties, and the 1885 engineering project that put a cascade where the fortress keep once stood.
