This guide to the Quartier des Tanneurs in Colmar traces the leatherworkers who once lived and worked in its tall half-timbered houses, drying hides in open attics and dumping waste into the canal below. It follows what became of that same neighborhood by the nineteen sixties, when the trade was gone but the poverty and decay it left behind were not, and the roughly one hundred fifty residents still living there.
