Savoy

This guide to Savoy in Helsinki opens with the restaurant's real luxury when it opened in 1937 on the eighth floor of a South Esplanade office block: not the view, but a full air conditioning system installed to clear cigar smoke from the dining room. It follows Aino and Alvar Aalto's design, the curved plywood and birch shaping the hall like a ship's salon, and the Golden Bell pendant light still made to Aalto's original pattern. It also traces the glassware on the tables back to a competition Aalto won the year before the room existed.
