San Martin Merkatua

This guide to the San Martin Market in San Sebastian starts with a chapel that once stood on this spot, cleared away when the Good Shepherd Cathedral was finished across town. In its place, in 1884, architect Jose Goicoa raised a fish and produce hall modeled on the iron-and-glass markets of nearby Bayonne, in France. A second pavilion went up in 1904 to handle the growing crowds, and architect Juan Alday later stitched the two buildings together with a roofed-over street.
