Palacio de Cristal

This guide to the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid opens with two young people from the Caroline Islands, Dolores Neisern and Luis Peñaripis, who arrived in Madrid in 1887 and never went home. It traces the glass-and-iron pavilion built in just five months by architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, modeled on London's Crystal Palace, and the colonial exhibition that used it and the surrounding park to put dozens of Igorot, Caroline and Mariana Islanders on display for paying visitors. A young medical student then living in Madrid, José Rizal, watched the spectacle with disgust.
