Zubizuri

This guide to Zubizuri, the white footbridge over Bilbao's Nervion River, opens with an architect suing his own city. Santiago Calatrava built it in 1997 as a symbol of Bilbao's rebirth; in 2006 the city let architect Arata Isozaki bolt on a connecting walkway and trim its railing, and Calatrava took the case to court over his moral rights as its creator. The bridge has its own quieter trouble too, the glass-brick deck underfoot, treacherously slick on a rainy Bilbao day.
