This guide to Puppy outside Bilbao's Guggenheim traces the sculpture back to 1992, when Jeff Koons built a short-lived wooden prototype of a giant West Highland terrier for a German art show, meant to bloom once and then be destroyed. It follows how he rebuilt the dog in steel and living flowers, and how an uneven bloom in Sydney five years later won over the Guggenheim's own directors. Koons picked that particular breed on purpose, one he felt was neither male nor female, so nobody looking up would feel left out.
