Puente de la Salve

This guide to the Puente de la Salve in Bilbao opens with the sailors who gave it its name, breaking into an old hymn as they rounded the river bend and caught sight of the Virgin of Begona above the harbor. It moves to 1972, when engineer Juan Batanero raised Spain's first cable-stayed bridge here, and to 1988, when elevators finally spared pedestrians a long climbing ramp. From there it follows French artist Daniel Buren's 2007 project to repaint the bridge's arches for the Guggenheim's anniversary, and the argument that still divides Bilbao over his choice of color.
