Masustegi-Monte Caramelo

This guide to Masustegi-Monte Caramelo in Bilbao follows the Galician migrants who arrived in the nineteen fifties and sixties to break stone in a hillside quarry owned by a wealthy Bilbao industrialist, and built their own homes because no one else would. Under Franco's government an unfinished structure could be torn down on a whim, so residents raised walls after dark and laid their own pipes and wiring by hand. Whole extended families crowded into single rooms, and there were not yet proper stairs cut into the slope.
