"Maman" de Louise Bourgeois

This guide to the spider sculpture Maman outside Bilbao's Guggenheim begins with a ten-year-old Louise Bourgeois watching her father's English tutor move into the family home and stay for a decade as his mistress, while her mother said nothing and kept working at her loom. It follows how Bourgeois later built this towering bronze and steel spider as a tribute to that mother, Josephine, calling her clever, patient and protective, someone who ate the mosquitoes that would otherwise bite you while you slept. Bourgeois cast the first version in steel for the 1999 opening of London's Tate Modern, then made six more in bronze.
