Bilbao La Concordia

This guide to Bilbao La Concordia station follows the odd path of a name: after an 1857 railway company collapse triggered a furious meeting of ruined investors that ended, against expectation, in a handshake, Bilbao started calling this stretch of riverside land concordia, harmony. Decades later, as the city's blast furnaces and shipyards choked the air, engineer Valentin Gorbena and architect Severino Achucarro chose ceramic tile, wrought iron vines and stained glass over another grey industrial box for the new terminus that opened in 1902. Look up at the floral ironwork on the facade, still catching the light against the grey stone around it.
