Saqqara Pyramid

This guide to the Step Pyramid at Saqqara opens with a sealed, windowless chamber beside it, where archaeologist Cecil Firth found a life-sized limestone statue of King Djoser in 1924, its eyes drilled through the wall to gaze at the stars. It follows Imhotep, Djoser's vizier, architect, physician and astronomer, who abandoned the flat mastaba tombs of earlier kings for a stack of six shrinking stone tiers, the first pyramid and the first monumental stone building on earth.
