Giza Zoo

This guide to Giza Zoo in Cairo starts on the slender iron footbridge overhead, built between 1875 and 1879 by Gustave Eiffel a decade before his Paris tower, for a garden Khedive Ismail first dreamed up to crown the Suez Canal's opening. It follows the zoo through its opening in 1891 and its decades as the finest collection in Africa, then to the inspectors and photographs that arrived once the money ran out.
