Coptic Museum
3 Mari Gerges, Kom Ghorab, Old Cairo, Cairo Governorate 4244001
Museum of Coptic Christian art and artifacts, built from pieces rescued from crumbling old churches.
In 1908 a young Coptic official named Marcus Simaika walked into the Coptic Patriarch's compound and found a silversmith weighing out centuries-old church silver to melt down and sell. The guide follows what he did in that moment, and how a single storeroom beside the ancient Hanging Church grew into a subscription-funded museum that opened its doors in March 1910. It also traces his later trips into monastery cells, pulling manuscripts out of the dust before they could be lost.
