Holy Spirit Church

This guide to Holy Spirit Church in Tallinn follows a carved oak clock above the door and the woodcarver who made it, Christian Ackermann, who arrived from Konigsberg, married into a local workshop, and then refused to join Tallinn's woodcarvers' guild. That refusal was taken as an insult, and the guild's masters fought back until the dispute landed in court, with some calling him Tallinn's Phidias. He went on to open his own workshop on Toompea Hill, filling Estonia's churches with altarpieces, pulpits and epitaphs in his swirling Baroque style.
