Estonian History Museum - Great Guild Hall

This guide to the Great Guild Hall in Tallinn asks who medieval Tallinn's richest merchant could still be barred from, even with money in hand. Finished around 1410, the hall belonged to a members-only club that required German-speaking, married men who already owned property in the city, while unmarried merchants waited their turn at the Brotherhood of the Blackheads down the street. Look up at the carved pillars overhead, holding up a ceiling that once presided over feasts, church services and court cases, while the cellar below became a tavern locals nicknamed the Sweet Hole.
