Liebieghaus

This guide to the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt starts with a small medieval relief of Saint Jude Thaddeus in the sculpture museum's collection, and the paper trail of receipts and letters behind it that lead back to a single signature turning up again and again. It traces how, between 1940 and 1942, the Städel Museum's director Ernst Holzinger picked out pieces for this museum in occupied France and the Netherlands, while his colleague Alfred Wolters bought at home from families who lost their collections along with almost everything else. Close to four hundred seventy objects entered this villa during those five years.
