Frankfurt Cathedral

This guide to Frankfurt Cathedral follows the ten Holy Roman Emperors crowned inside between 1562 and 1792, chosen first in the small Wahlkapelle built after the 1356 Golden Bull named Frankfurt the empire's election site. It then turns to the night of March 22, 1944, when a firestorm poured through the cathedral's windows and burned out its interior, leaving only the walls and the fourteenth-century high choir standing. Rebuilding took most of the 1950s, stone by stone, in a city choosing its own direction for the years ahead.
