Dom-Römer-Quartier

This guide to the Dom-Romer-Quartier in Frankfurt traces the medieval square between cathedral and city hall from the 1944 firestorm that destroyed some 1,250 half-timbered houses, through the concrete office block Frankfurt planted on the ruins in the 1970s for ninety-three million deutsche marks, to the decision decades later to tear that building down. Craftspeople then worked from old photographs and salvaged fragments to rebuild houses on the original footprints.
