Rheinboulevard

Rheinboulevard's guide starts at a chunk of nearly two-thousand-year-old Roman masonry folded into the base of these riverside steps in Cologne, a remnant of the Castrum Divitia fort that once guarded this stretch of the Rhine. It traces how the ruin sat forgotten under a nineteenth-century building until engineers building the new steps uncovered it and built around it instead of over it. The guide then turns to the present, the nightly ritual of locals climbing down with a Kölsch to watch the sunset behind the cathedral across the water.
